Eleven years ago, when Mr. Hatten and I moved back from California, I took an engineering position for the State of Montana. It wasn’t long after starting this new job before I realized I had found my best ‘girlfriend’ at work. His name was Tom. Not only was I blessed to have met Tom, but I was most certainly fortunate to meet his wife, Dolores, as well. Tom retired about three years after I started but we’ve touched base here and there to check in and catch up. This year, the Hattens received an invitation to a 50th anniversary party for Tom and Dolores. Without a question, I knew I would be there. AND without a question, I also knew that these two would be in front of my camera. 😉 You see, I think we all know that 50 years is worth celebrating. But this ’50 years’ still takes on something special. I think there isn’t a whole lot of doubt that they love each other more TODAY than they did 50 years ago. They have three grown children, five grandchildren, a heap of extended family and friends and without even knowing it, they have passed forth their unconditional love and kindness and as a result, have enveloped themselves with endless, pure, and genuine love. This was certainly visible at their anniversary gathering this past Saturday. I know that I join the many who were in attendance in simply feeling blessed to just get to watch. Tom and Dolores, you set an unprecedented example of admiration and adoration for each other, as well as simply offering yourselves to others as parents, as role models, as family, and as friends. THANK YOU for showing us all what it’s really supposed to be about.
Yeah, just as I was saying…I’m not the only one who kinda likes these two people.
Skye,
What a phenomenal job you did in capturing these special moments AND explaining how special these two are to each other and everyone blessed enough to have them in their lives. The pictures of just the two of them truly captures the true essence of their love and admiration of each other. What a gift you have in photography!!! You were not just a great photographer this past Saturday but an amazing friend – not only to Tom and Dolores, but to everyone there!
Thank you for helping us capture and keep the memories of that day with us forever and ever!!!
Tonya Slovarp
Thanks so much, Tonya, for the kind words! 🙂 Means a ton and made me smile!
SO very nice to see you all on Saturday…those girls of yours are super sweet!
Hope to see you all again soon…thanks again!
I first met Dolores at the May Butler Center on the first day of school sometime back in the early 80s I think. I could see she was new and she looked like a person I’d like to know. So in a rare outburst of extroversion I went up and introduced myself and welcomed her to the district. As it turned out, we were both assigned to Jim Darcy Elementary, and we went on to be part of the best and most fun special education team in the whole world, along with Jim Benish and Kathleen Hunthausen. Oh and our principal, Dave Pippin.
While the kids were young, the Slovarps had a Christmas Eve tradition of Midnight Mass, then dinner at their house which included me and Susan Dotter and her boys Brian and Rob. Susan and I had traditional foods we always brought and Tom and Dolores always had prime rib and shrimp for us. Yum!
Over the years I came to know “St. Thomas of Slovarp” as the good and kind man he is. Although he does have his limits. One time as I was about to return a boy I had for respite care for the weekend to his parents, I broke my finger. I called Dolores for help and of course she said she would take me to the ER and Tom could drive Greg home. Tom however drew the line at driving alone with an autistic kid. “No,” he said to Dolores, “YOU drive Greg home and I will take Margaret to the ER!”
Love this, Margaret…thanks for sharing! 🙂
